Christmas Carol (2009)
Charles D's classic novel about Ebenezer Scrooge has probably been adapted and re-adapted to stage and film more times than any other source material in existence. Even the Simpsons, Flintstones, and Jetsons has a version under their belts. Each time you hear of one being made, you always have to ask "Why? Its been done so many times, why again?" Yet even when you ask, you know deep down you're going to see it. Why? Because despite the only difference being who plays who, and what lines from the book are brought in/left out, Christmas Carol is one of those stories you just have to see over and over again. Its perhaps one of extremely few pure perfect stories in the world.
So since everyone and their grandmother knows the plot to Christmas Carol, we might as well should skip to how this movie's style compares to the others.
This being Disney's second outing with Christmas Carol (the first being the half hour long Mickey version. I highly recommend seeing it if you haven't yet) they decide to use the same style of 3-D animation used in Beowulf. With the actors dressed in blue chroma outfits, and scanned from head to toe into the computers and practically act out the movie to be done in a more life like moving 3-D animation. Unlike Beowulf, they do it much better, and still keep a style of exaggeration to the character's appearance. So yes, the movie is very pretty to look at, and you'll swear at times you're looking at live action scenes. Its that good.
Jim Carrey is surprisingly amazing at the roles of Scrooge (teen and old), Christmas Past, and Present, but because he plays their voices, each of the characters look almost exactly like him. A minor annoyance, so it shouldn't really bother you. Since those are the major characters of the film, everyone else doesn't get enough screen time to really give a good or bad reaction.
Despite the fact Disney went with Jim Carrey for the lead role, they in no way made this a comedy movie like most thought. Yes, there are slight chuckles here and there, but the movie is still set in the same serious tone that the book had. If that disappoints you, there is still the Muppet Christmas Carol (another high recommendation if you haven't seen it yet).
Final verdict: Great story, good movie. You can't really go wrong with Christmas Carol. So unless you're sick and tired of Christmas Carol adaptations, there's no reason to skip this one.
