Knowing
Psychics, mathematicians, or looney birds; whatever you consider them, they are among those that have believed that numbers (or in some cases words in the bible), can tell the future, and have told of events that have already passed. With it being such a fascinating topic, one would believe it would make a good Armageddon plot device. The correct answer we're looking for is only slightly...only slightly.
Nicolas Cage stars as John Koestler, a widower and professor of astrophysics at MIT. and Chandler Canterbury plays as his son Caleb Koestler; who for an elementary school kid is extremely fascinated with his education. As in he watches nothing but National Geographic, and enjoys doing his homework.
At the start of the film, you are shown a elementary girl in the late 50s, who begins hearing voices and jots down what seems to be random numbers and sticks them in a time capsule. Caleb is the one who receives this letter of numbers once it is opened, having been randomly handed to him as the rest were being passed out. As the movie unfolds, John soon learns that the numbers actually accounted for every tragic event from 1959 to the present, including 9/11, with three others bound to happen over the course of the film.
What follows is your basic, but more subtle, disaster movie. The characters are thrown together and dry, the plot is laid out before your eyes in almost full detail by the time the letter is brought out from the time capsule, and filled with nice special effects.
Needless to say, the movie isn't bad, but its not good either. Nothing in the movie will wow you as much as one believed it would. Whoever wrote the plot line wanted to hide the major plot point from the audience, but they did a bad job at it.
To be honest, you will not miss much if you decide not to see this movie. It is worth one watch, nothing more.
